The Trends Through Two Weeks: Dogs Keep Cashing, the Over Party Ended, and Home Field Is Missing

Week 1 was an over-hitting, road-dog festival. Week 2 flipped the totals and kept the dogs: six outright underdog winners, unders 10-6, and road teams going 9-7 straight up. What two weeks of results actually tell you, and what they don't.

The Trends Through Two Weeks: Dogs Keep Cashing, the Over Party Ended, and Home Field Is Missing - cover artBetting Recap

Two weeks of the 2026 season are in the books, which means the first trends are old enough to describe and still too young to trust. We graded all 16 Week 2 games against the closing numbers using the final scores, stacked them on top of our Week 1 sheet, and here is the honest two-week ledger.

The dogs are still eating

Week 1's headline was road dogs going 7-2 against the spread. Week 2's answer: underdogs went 9-7 ATS and SIX of them won outright, paying between +124 and +330 on the moneyline. Cleveland (+330) won in Tampa through a two-hour weather delay, New Orleans (+285) walked into Baltimore and beat the Ravens as 8.5-point dogs, the Raiders (+260) handled the Chargers by 12, the Patriots (+180) held Pittsburgh to 3, Buffalo (+195) hung 41 on Detroit, and Cincinnati (+124) won in Houston by 14. Two weeks is not a season, but the market opening the year overpriced on reputation is the oldest September pattern there is, and so far 2026 is running it back.

The over party lasted exactly one week

Week 1 games averaged 50 points against lines in the mid-40s and overs went 8-6-1. Week 2 slammed the door: unders went 10-6, and games averaged just 40.4 points against an average closing total of 45.1. The honest attribution is weather, not regression mysticism: a wet, windy Sunday produced a 9-3 Vikings-Bears game with zero touchdowns, a 20-3 Patriots-Steelers slog, and an overtime 20-17 Packers-Jets game. Through two weeks the totals ledger sits at 16 unders, 14 overs, and a push, which is to say: dead even, exactly like the long-run math says it should be. Anyone who bet Week 2 overs because Week 1 overs cashed paid the tax on chasing, the trap our recap warned about. Our own league lived both halves of that story in one week: we cashed Over 53.5 on the 72-point Thursday opener in Buffalo, and then watched the rest of the weekend go under.

Home field has not shown up yet

Road teams went 9-7 straight up in Week 2, including road wipeouts by Seattle (31-7 in Arizona), Carolina (34-3 in Atlanta), and Cincinnati (20-6 in Houston). Home favorites of 6.5 or more points went 2-3 straight up on the week: the Bucs, Ravens, and Chargers all lost outright at home, and only the 49ers (minus 12.5 against Miami) and the Rams (minus 7 on Monday night) held serve. The early-season explanation is boring and probably right: September rosters are still sorting themselves out, the market still prices home field at its historical value, and the gap between those two facts is where the dog money has lived for two straight weeks.

What survives contact with Week 3

Here is the two-week scoreboard worth carrying forward: underdogs keep covering more than half the board, backup quarterbacks are about to start for four teams, as covered in the injury column, and totals are a coin flip that briefly impersonated a trend in each direction. The durable lesson is not any single number, it is the shape of the two weeks: whatever cashed loudest last week got overbet this week. For a league picking one bet, that argues for the unfashionable side of whatever your group chat is most confident about, for checking the weather forecast before any total, and for treating a +200 moneyline dog with a real path as a legitimate vote, not a joke option. Every trend above is a tiebreaker between bets you already like, not a thesis, same as it was after one week.
