Rookie Quarterbacks Lit Up Preseason Week 1. Which Ones Actually Have a Path to Starting in 2026?

Preseason Week 1 is when rookie quarterbacks look their best: vanilla defenses, backup pass rushers, scripted first drives. So the question isn't who played well — several did — it's who's standing behind a starter old enough, expensive enough, or shaky enough that a real opportunity exists this season. Ranked by path, not by passer rating.

Fernando Mendoza, Raiders — clearest path, on a clock

The No. 1 overall pick went 10-of-16 for 97 yards and a 6-yard touchdown to Jack Bech, took a sack, and settled down nicely after a messy first drive. He sits behind Kirk Cousins, who's 38 with a track record of good-not-great seasons on short-term deals. That's the textbook setup for a midseason handoff: a losing September, a bye week, and the franchise quarterback takes over. Fantasy: hold him in dynasty, ignore him in redraft until you hear "Mendoza will start" out loud. League-pick angle: Raiders games get more volatile, not less, once the switch happens — totals become guesswork for a few weeks.

Drew Allar, Steelers — best debut, longest line

Allar was the story of the weekend: 10-of-13 for 153 yards, two touchdown passes and a read-option rushing score, with the arm strength that made him a first-round talent before a rocky final college season dropped him to No. 76. The catch is the room. Aaron Rodgers is the starter — reportedly heading into his final season — and Mason Rudolph is the entrenched No. 2, so Allar is competing with Will Howard for QB3. Realistic path: none in 2026 barring an injury cascade, and a real one in 2027 when Rodgers walks. That's still a great outcome for a Day 2 pick. Fantasy: dynasty stash with upside; nothing in redraft.

Ty Simpson, Rams — most polished, most blocked

Simpson's 21-of-25, 190 yards, two touchdowns to Dean Connors was the cleanest tape of the week — rollouts, play-action, on-time throws into tight windows. He's also behind Matthew Stafford, who's still elite when healthy and has Stetson Bennett as the No. 2. The path here is health, full stop: Stafford is 38 with a well-documented back and elbow history, and Sean McVay didn't spend the 13th pick on a clipboard. If Stafford misses time, Simpson plays and the Rams' skill players barely lose value — that's the fantasy takeaway. Puka Nacua and Davante Adams owners can relax a little.

Cade Klubnik, Jets — the quiet QB2

The fourth-rounder went 5-of-7 for 56 yards, including a 21-yarder to Garrett Wilson, and looks locked in as the backup behind Geno Smith. Geno is 35, on a modest deal, and playing for a franchise that changes direction every 18 months. Klubnik doesn't have a Week 1 path, but he has the second-likeliest "starting by November" path in this class. Worth a late dynasty flier.

Luke Altmyer, Lions — the fun one

Undrafted out of Illinois, Altmyer played the entire game against Cincinnati and threw for 130 yards on 13-of-22 with a touchdown to Tarik Black — and two interceptions, one off a bobble by Isaac TeSlaa, the other a hair beyond Dominic Lovett's reach. That's a rookie who moved the ball and got unlucky, and it's why Detroit fans spent the weekend talking about him. His path is the practice squad and, if he keeps this up, the No. 2 job behind Jared Goff. There is no 2026 starting scenario short of disaster, and Goff's durability makes disaster unlikely. Enjoy him; don't roster him.

The undrafted arms worth a bookmark

Baltimore's Joe Fagnano (22-of-28, 224 yards, a touchdown to Ja'Kobi Lane, no sacks on 29 dropbacks) is on a practice-squad track behind Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley. Tampa Bay's Jalon Daniels (10-of-15, 111 yards, plus the game-winning rushing score) showed the dual-threat game that made him interesting at Kansas. Neither has a path in 2026. Both are the kind of name that shows up as a surprise QB2 in 2027.

The honest ranking

Path to starting snaps in 2026: Mendoza (likely by midseason), then Simpson (only via a Stafford injury), then Klubnik (only via a Geno benching), then everyone else. Talent shown in Week 1: Allar, then Simpson, then Mendoza. The gap between those two lists is the whole point of watching preseason quarterbacks — the box score tells you who's good, the depth chart tells you who's playing, and for fantasy and for your league's weekly pick, only the second list pays.
