Josh Allen to DJ Moore Already Looks Like a Problem for the AFC, and a Gift for Your Fantasy Draft

Preseason box scores are mostly noise. Then there's the second play of Buffalo's opener at the new Highmark Stadium: Josh Allen to DJ Moore for 32 yards, with the nearest defender 14 yards away by Next Gen Stats' count. That's not a preseason play. That's a preview.

What actually happened

Allen played only the first quarter in the Bills' 29–14 win over Carolina on Aug. 15 and led two scoring drives. Khalil Shakir opened the game with a 21-yard catch, then Allen went to Moore for 32 on the very next snap. Moore added an 11-yarder on the second series and an 18-yarder after that, three catches on four targets, 61 yards, in roughly ten minutes of football. The drive finished with a 9-yard touchdown to Keon Coleman, the first score in the new building. Allen's postgame line on his new receiver was simple: "He's a heck of a football player and we're lucky to have him."

There was one held breath. Moore grabbed at his ankle after the 18-yard catch, walked off on his own, and was moving fine on the sideline afterward, reports at the time framed it as a bullet dodged rather than a real injury. Worth monitoring through Week 2 at Cleveland, but nothing to redraft your board over.

Why the fit matters more than the box score

Buffalo acquired Moore from Chicago this offseason specifically to give Allen the kind of separator the offense hasn't had since Stefon Diggs left. Moore's game, yards after the catch on in-breakers, winning early in the route, is exactly what an Allen offense has been missing: someone who's open at the top of the drop so Allen doesn't have to hero-ball. Two drives don't prove a target share, but the usage did: Moore led the team in targets while Shakir got the first look and Coleman got the red-zone look. That's a real pecking order taking shape, not preseason charity.

The fantasy read

If you draft in the next two weeks, Moore is the Bills receiver to pay for. Coleman is the red-zone touchdown lottery ticket; Shakir is the PPR floor; Moore is the one who gets the volume and the yards. In a 12-team PPR draft he's a WR2 with WR1 weeks, and he goes a round earlier than he should have every time a highlight like that 32-yarder makes the rounds. Allen himself stays a first-round quarterback in superflex, a new No. 1 receiver only raises his ceiling.

The league-pick angle
