Preseason Week 2 Totals Went 8–8. The Books Caught Up — Here's Every Number and What It Means for Your Week 3 Pick

After Week 1's 12–4 under sweep, Week 2 landed dead even: 595 points against an average line of 37.4. We called the bounce-back last week. Here's the full sheet, the two totals that decided it, and the read for cutdown week.

Last week we wrote that Week 1's 12–4 under parade probably wouldn't repeat, for two reasons: starters play more in Week 2, and books adjust. Both happened. Week 2's sixteen games split exactly 8–8 against the closing totals, scoring jumped more than three points a game, and the market — which hung an average total of 37.4 — watched the games land at an average of 37.2. That's about as close to a bullseye as a sportsbook gets.

Every game, every number

The overs: 49ers–Chargers closed 38.5 and detonated for 58 (41–17 Niners). Panthers–Jaguars 37.5, final 34–17 Panthers (51). Cowboys–Cardinals 37.5, final 34–13 Cowboys (47). Packers–Broncos, the week's highest total at 41.5, cleared it at 46 (33–13 Packers). Eagles–Patriots 36.5 went 45 (24–21 Pats). Raiders–Texans 38.5 squeaked over at 42. Falcons–Colts 36.5 went 40 on Atlanta's 34–6 rout. Bills–Browns 36.5 crept over at 38 (31–7 Buffalo).

The unders: Ravens–Vikings produced 16 points against a 36.5 line — the week's biggest miss. Jets–Steelers managed 17, with Pittsburgh shut out at home. Giants–Dolphins (29 vs. 36.5), Commanders–Lions (30 vs. 36.5), Chiefs–Bucs (31 vs. 37.5), Saints–Rams (34 vs. 37.5, the Saints blanked 34–0), and Seahawks–Titans (35 vs. 37.5) all stayed comfortably down. And then there was Bears–Bengals: 36 points against 36.5. One field goal's worth of nothing decided that ticket by half a point.

What actually changed from Week 1

Scoring rose from 33.9 points a game to 37.2 — almost exactly the 'starters play into the second quarter' bump we flagged. But the books moved too: the average Week 2 total was 37.4, down nearly a point from Week 1's 38.25, precisely because the market had just watched a 12–4 under week. Lower lines plus higher scoring is how a trend dies: the same blanket 'bet the under' rule that went 12–4 in Week 1 went 8–8 in Week 2 and paid the vig for the privilege.

The blowout pattern is the real signal

Look at where the overs came from: 41–17, 34–17, 34–13, 33–13, 34–6. Five of the eight overs were one-sided games where a second-half backup kept scoring against a roster full of players getting cut on Tuesday. Preseason overs are rarely shootouts between starters — they're mismatches between bottom-of-roster units. That's nearly impossible to predict from a depth chart, which is why totals in August stay close to a coin flip no matter what last week's sheet said.

The read for Week 3

Week 3 is cutdown week: some teams give starters a final dress rehearsal, others sit everyone healthy and play the bubble. That split is the whole edge. Before your league's chooser proposes a Week 3 total, check two things — what each coach said about starter usage, and whether either team has a quarterback battle still open (live battles mean real offense deep into the game). A total with two disinterested coaches and settled depth charts leans under; a total with two teams still auditioning players leans over. The number itself is fair — the books just proved it two weeks running.
