Bankroll Rules for Betting Crews: Sizing a Season So a Cold Streak Never Kills the Fun

The difference between a league that lasts five seasons and one that dies in October is almost always bet sizing.

Most betting-crew blowups aren't about a bad pick — they're about a bet sized so big that a normal cold streak felt like a catastrophe. Bankroll management for a league is the same discipline sharps use, applied to a shared pool.

The 10–15% rule

Size the weekly bet around 10–15% of one member's season dues. If everyone put in $200, bet $20–30 a week. Across a 16–18 week season, the total betting budget stays near a quarter of the pool — big enough that wins matter, small enough that even an 0-for-October stretch leaves the season alive and the group chat friendly.

Expect the cold streak (it's coming)

Even a genuinely good 55% crew will lose 4 bets in a row about once a season, and 3 in a row several times. That's not bad luck — that's what 55% looks like over 17 weeks. Leagues that pre-commit to a fixed weekly wager ride it out. Leagues that double up 'to get it back' are doing a random walk toward zero with extra steps.

Flat betting beats chasing, always

The single best rule a league can adopt: the wager is the wager. Same stake every week, win or lose. Rolling a fixed share of winnings into next week's bet (a rollover) is a fine way to let hot streaks compound — the key is that it's winnings riding, never fresh money chasing losses.

The floor is the point

A well-run league knows its worst case on day one: lose every single week and the pool still holds everything except the betting budget. That floor is what makes the whole thing entertainment instead of exposure. Protect it, size to it, and the season pays for itself in stories no matter how the bets land.
